2012 Fall Seminar Series

Pittsford Crew announces a series of seminars for parents, friends and family, designed to inform our athletes’ families with various aspects of the sport and our club.  If you’ve ever wondered what `split’ really means, what a good pre-work out snack might be, what’s under the hood of those boats and what makes a tank tick, here’s your path to enlightenment!

All seminars are completely free of charge to Pittsford Crew parents, friends and family but space is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot for all three of our Fall Seminars.

Anatomy of a Rowing Shell - Tuesday, October 23rd, 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Brad Sayer, Pittsford Crew’s Boat Master, will lead an informative talk about shell design and construction.  What are the desirable characteristics of a boat?  What happens when a boat ages?  What is the proper care and maintenance of a racing shell? What is the life expectancy of a boat?   What are the other necessary pieces of equipment?  All of these questions and more will be answered PLUS you’ll have the opportunity to tour the boathouse and the work shop for a behind the scenes look at the Pittsford Crew fleet.

The Home Training Table: Feeding a Winner - Thursday, October 18th, 7:30 - 9:00 pm

With competitive rowers there are many pieces to consider, technique, teamwork, competition, fitness and overall health etc. This seminar will cover and discuss nutrition and hydration strategies for rowers. Rowers consume considerable amounts of energy and fluids during practice and competition.  How should rowers rehydrate and refuel? What should rowers be eating or drinking before and after practice or before and after competition? We will also touch on weight loss, gain or weight maintenance for rowers.

The Rowing Machine for Dummies - an introduction to the ergometer - Wed. October 10th, 7:30 - 9:00 pm

The ergometer or erg is the weapon of choice for rowers looking to improve their strength and aerobic base off the water.  This relatively simple piece of equipment provides one of the best full body workouts there is to be had.  Technique is the key to maximizing its benefits and minimizing the risk of injury.  Learn all the 'how to’s’ and find out more about how coaches use it to make decisions about line-ups, boating, and an athlete's physical preparedness. This seminar will be hands on and there may be opportunities for a workout.  Please, wear snug fitting athletic wear (e.g. t-shirt, shorts, sneakers) so that you are comfortable working on the ergs. We often recommend spandex wear for athletes because it is less likely that they will get caught in the moving parts of the erg or boat.  If you have spandex-type workout gear, please wear it but don't feel obligated to go out and buy any just for this seminar.  It would also be a good idea to bring a water bottle so that you can stay hydrated throughout.
